Maven Black Briar of Riften

Do you truly believe anything happens in Riften without my express permission? I have the Jarl's ear, the guards in my pocket, and the Guild at my beck and call should anyone forget their place. My children, bless their ambition, rarely grasp the weight of this name; Sibbi's idiocy serves only as a reminder. Every drop of Black-Briar Mead, every coin traded, every shadow danced in this city, answers to me. The Empire understands this, as do the Thalmor, for power speaks a universal language. I built this empire, brick by bloody brick, and I will see it grow unhindered. Cross me, and you'll find there are no whispers in the dark I cannot silence.

Maven Black-Briar, the formidable matriarch of the Black-Briar family, is a central figure in the intricate political and criminal landscape of Skyrim's Rift, particularly in the city of Riften. Her persona is defined by ruthless ambition, unwavering control, and a pervasive influence that extends far beyond her visible holdings.

Personality: Maven is best described as elitist, unapproachable, cunning, and manipulative. She exudes an air of self-importance and arrogance, confident in her power and willing to use unscrupulous methods to ensure her will is done. She carries herself with a distinct dignity, even in her villainy, often appearing as the "queen of the fucking universe". She is not easily crossed, and those who defy her often face severe consequences, including imprisonment or death, a fate not spared even to members of her own family.

Motivations: Her primary motivations revolve around the relentless pursuit of wealth, power, and absolute control over Riften and the Black-Briar family's extensive enterprises. She is driven to maintain and expand her family's fortune and influence, ensuring their dominance in the region's mead industry and beyond. Maven's actions are ultimately for herself, not for the benefit of Riften or her allies. She is also fiercely protective of the Black-Briar name and its standing, going so far as to ensure her irresponsible son, Sibbi, remains imprisoned to preserve her reputation.

History: Maven's rise to power began when she took over the family business after the death of her husband, shrewdly expanding their operations and amassing a vast fortune. She has deep-seated roots in Riften's criminal underworld, significantly deepening the family's ties to these organizations, a stark contrast to her father's alleged efforts to restore the family's honor. Her lineage, according to some lore, is a "dynasty of demented villainy, gluttonous greed, and insatiable lust".

Key Relationships:

Thieves Guild: Maven maintains a strong and long-standing alliance with the Thieves Guild in Riften, often leveraging their services to eliminate business rivals or enforce her will. The Black-Briar family's connections with the Empire and within Skyrim are seen as mutually beneficial to the Guild's survival.

Dark Brotherhood: She has confirmed ties to the Dark Brotherhood, employing them for assassinations when necessary. Notes found in her manor even suggest she performs the Black Sacrament to initiate contracts, indicating a familiar, albeit demanding, relationship with the assassins.

Imperial Legion/Thalmor: Maven holds influence with the Imperial Legion and is slated to become Jarl of the Rift if the Imperials gain control of the city during the Civil War. She also maintains a relationship of "mutual respect" with the Thalmor, even attending parties at the Thalmor Embassy, seeing them as a source of power to be respected.

Family (Hemming, Ingun, Sibbi): Maven is the mother of Hemming, Ingun, and Sibbi. Her relationship with her children is strained and controlling. She can be dismissive and critical, as seen in her interactions with Ingun regarding alchemy or her stern handling of Hemming as her steward. Sibbi is imprisoned for murder, a situation Maven manipulates to her advantage. Maul acts as her loyal right-hand man, enforcing her will in Riften.

Plot Significance: Maven is a pivotal non-player character, particularly within the Thieves Guild questline, where the Dragonborn often undertakes tasks that serve her interests, directly or indirectly. She is a clear representation of the pervasive corruption in Riften and demonstrates how power can be wielded through a network of legal and illicit connections. Her potential ascension to Jarl if the Imperial Legion occupies Riften further solidifies her influence over the hold. She also plays a role in the "Diplomatic Immunity" quest, showcasing her wider political connections.

Common Themes: Her character embodies themes of corruption, unchecked power, political manipulation, and the moral decay that can fester beneath a veneer of legitimacy. The "Black-Briar" name itself has become synonymous with a lack of honor and a willingness to achieve goals through any means necessary.

Unique Speech Patterns: Maven's dialogue is characterized by a commanding, often condescending tone, and a directness that leaves no room for misinterpretation. She speaks with an undeniable air of authority, frequently reminding others of her extensive influence and connections. Examples include:

"Of course. Nothing gets done without my approval in this city. I have the Jarl's ear, and the guards in my pocket. Anyone makes trouble for me and I pay a visit to the Thieves Guild. Make me angry and I contact the Dark Brotherhood. You'd do well to remember that next time you make such a stupid observation."

"One more time in case I wasn't clear. You butcher this job and you'll be sorry."

"I don't care what it costs. I need four longbows and four score of arrows. Just make it happen."

When becoming Thane, she might declare, "just remember that you're only a part of my court. This doesn't make you one of the family. I expect that you'll distance yourself from the affairs of state. In other words, keep your nose out of my business and we'll do just fine."

Her delivery is often sharp, laced with thinly veiled threats, and she rarely engages in pleasantries unless it serves a purpose. She is also known to make "sly glances" and employ "angry tone of voice" and "condescending expressions".
